Support for charities and non-profit organizations Canada has invested $350 million through the Emergency Community Support Fund. Starting today, charities and non-profit organizations can apply to receive financial assistance for services responding to COVID-19. Services eligible for support include: - Volunteer-based home deliveries of groceries and medications
- Need-based transportation services for seniors or persons with disabilities
- Information and support lines
- Virtual contact services that replace social gathering, in-person, and one-on-one contact
- Training services or supplies that enable ongoing volunteer contributions
Service providers will need to apply through United Way Centraide Canada, the Canadian Red Cross, or the Community Foundations of Canada, depending on the needs specific to their organizations. An additional $25 million is being invested to support Black community organizations over the next five years. Canadian Red Cross Funding In addition to the contributions listed above, a separate $100 million has been invested to support the Red Cross’ response to COVID-19. The distribution of the funds will take on the form of: - $41 million to address needs requiring immediate attention
- $15 million to strengthen the Red Cross’ response capacity
- $25 million to support public health efforts
- Another $59 million will support relief and recovery for floods and wildfires during this year and for future preparations
Support for Women’s Shelters Women and Gender Equality Canada is continuing its work to support women fleeing gender-based violence with an investment of $40 million. Over 500 women’s shelters and sexual assault centres have been included as part of the effort, including Women’s Shelters Canada, the Canadian Women’s Foundation, and to the Government of Quebec. Investment to Support Seniors Canada is investing $2.5 billion for a one-time tax-free payment of $300 for seniors eligible for the Old Age Security (OAS) pension, with an additional $200 for seniors eligible for the Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS). Additionally, the government will invest $20 million in expanding the New Horizons for Seniors Program which provides support for community-based projects that reduce isolation, improve the quality of life of seniors, and help them maintain a social support network. Support for Small Businesses and Communities A total of $962 million in funding has been invested into the creation of the Regional Relief and Recovery Fund (RRRF). The fund will support small businesses and communities delivered through regional development agencies (RDA) aid manufacturing, technology, tourism, and other key economies throughout the country. Funding for Canada’s Academic Research Community Canada has invested $450 million to support universities and health research institutes to retain members of staff during the COVID-19 pandemic. - The investment will support institutions to retain staff, funding up to 75 per cent of each individual’s wages.
- The investment will also cover up to 75 per cent of costs related to maintaining research-related activities, including the safe storage of dangerous materials, and restarting interrupted data sets.
