Dr. Lea Tufford

Lea Tufford is an Assistant Professor in the School of Social Work at Laurentian University in Sudbury, Ontario. Her research interests include child abuse and neglect, social work education, mindfulness, and ecological social work. She has a particular interest in simulation-based research and learning. Drawing on two decades of clinical practice, Lea maintains a small private practice where she counsels individuals, couples, and families.

Description

This presentation focuses on mandatory reporting of child abuse and neglect. It begins by orienting viewers to child welfare in Canada and non-reporting of child abuse and neglect. Viewers are then provided with a comprehensive framework outlining decision-making factors of mandatory reporters when faced with a suspicion of child abuse and neglect and therapeutic relationship repair strategies to be used with clients during and following the report. The presentation concludes with suggestions on how field instructors can integrate discussions with social work practicum students on mandatory reporting.

At the end of this webinar, participants should be able to:

• Understand the reasons for non-reporting of child abuse and neglect

• Describe factors which impact reporters’ decision-making

• Understand strategies to maintain / repair the relationship with clients following the report

• Identify how field instructors can teach practicum students about child abuse and neglect and mandatory reporting
