Funding for Indigenous Communities The federal government has made an additional investment to support First Nations, Inuit, and Métis communities respond to the COVID-19 crisis. - $285.1 million will be used to support ongoing public health responses
- $270 million will supplement the On-Reserve Income Assistance Program
- $44.8 million will be invested over a period of five years to build twelve new shelters for Indigenous women and girls fleeing violence
This investment is being provided in addition to the current $305 million in financing of the Indigenous Support Fund, and $75 million supporting urban and off-reserve Indigenous communities. Information on how funding for urban and off-reserve communities will be distributed is expected to be released in the near future. Federal Initiative to Stop Tobacco Use and Reduce Youth Vaping Canada is investing an additional $4.8 million under Health Canada’s Substance Use and Additions Program, and as a part of Canada’s Tobacco Strategy. Relief for Federally Regulated Pension Plans Through the Solvency Special Payment Relief Regulations, 2020, solvency special payments have been temporarily paused for all defined benefit pension plan sponsors. The regulation will remain in effect until December 30, 2020. Social workers can learn more here. Funding for the social and economic inclusion of persons with disabilities Up to $6.4 million has been invested over three years to support 16 organizations across Canada through the disability component of the Social Development Partnerships Program (SDPP-D). This funding will support partnerships between disability stakeholders and the federally regulated private sector and help to develop best practice tools and resources in the areas of accessible workplaces, accessible service design and delivery, and communication. |
