Social Work Practice in Child Welfare: A CASW Public Message

In 2003 the CASW launched the Child Welfare Project which collected data from social workers within this field of practice. There was a clear and universal message in the results of this national survey, that front line child welfare practitioners believe that the role of social workers in child welfare is not well understood.

Increased awareness and understanding of the social work role within child welfare would benefit the general public, agencies, social workers and the families that they work with. The public message describes social worker’s role in child welfare, social workers’ education and the mandate of child welfare agencies.
