For Immediate Release
OTTAWA, November 20, 2014- For National Housing Day (November 21), the Canadian Association of Social Workers (CASW) again appeals to the Government of Canada to provide the leadership to develop a national long-term affordable housing plan. This plan must link all levels of government, as well as the private sector, in creating a comprehensive strategy to eliminate homelessness in Canada.
“Affordable housing is a cornerstone of a modern civil society, and homelessness is not acceptable in Canada. No child should have to worry about where to sleep at night” states CASW President, Morel Caissie.
In the 1960s, Canada recognized that provision of affordable housing allowed for the expansion of our economy, as well as the near elimination of expensive and temporary homeless shelters. Since the 1990’s, successive federal governments have reneged on this commitment of providing affordable housing for all Canadians. The consequences have been well documented, and include a dramatic rise in the use of emergency shelters and food banks across Canada: what began as temporary solutions have become permanent fixtures in our communities.
“The lack of a national affordable housing plan, and corresponding federal investment, is costing Canada twofold. Not only are citizens prevented from economic participation, but countless Canadians are trapped in the vicious and costly cycle of poverty as well” states Caissie.
National Housing Day provides an opportunity for CASW to join a growing number of Canadians that recognize the importance of an affordable housing strategy supported by an immediate reinvestment and commitment of funding for future generations. Consequently, CASW calls for deeper investments from the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) towards a comprehensive national long-term affordable housing strategy.
“The irony is that many of Canada’s current national leaders benefited from the compassion and sound policy decisions of the generations that came before them. It is time that Canada recommits to progressive thinking, and demonstrates that affordable housing is a priority” states Caissie.
