For Immediate Release
October 2, 2013

The Canadian Association of Social Workers (CASW) is encouraging social workers and all Canadians to join one of the 177 Sisters In Spirit Vigils organized nationwide on October 4th 2013 to call on levels of government to work with Aboriginal women and representative organizations to address the high numbers of missing and murdered Aboriginal women and girls in Canada.

CASW has proudly endorsed a joint statement drafted by the Native Women’s Association of Canada (NWAC) to be read nationwide at each rally across Canada at the Sisters In Spirit Vigils. A detailed list of the Vigil locations can be found at: http://www.nwac.ca/2013-vigil-locations.

The Premiers of Canada’s provinces and territories have publicly committed their support for a national inquiry into murdered and missing Aboriginal women. The UN Human Rights Council for Canada has recently called for the Government of Canada to develop a comprehensive national review to end violence against Aboriginal women. It’s time for the Government of Canada respond appropriately.
