The Canadian Association of Social Workers (CASW) joins with the global community in mourning the passing of the celebrated leader and visionary of peace, Nelson Mandela.

“Despite incurring great personal strife, Mandela’s acts of peaceful dissention led to the liberation of the oppressed and the oppressor” states CASW President, Morel Caissie. “His life stands as an inspiration to all who are oppressed and to all who are opposed to oppression.”

In honour of his commitment to democracy and peace, the United Nations General Assembly, in 2009, unanimously adopted July 18 as Nelson Mandela International Day. The overarching objective of Mandela Day is to inspire individuals to take action to help change the world for the better.

“The legacy of Mandela lives in every action of peaceful resistance and in all actions towards building a more equal, cooperative and hopeful world” states Caissie. “Imagine the change if we all made every day a Mandela Day.”
