Canadian Association of Social Workers’ Highest Honour:
Glenn Drover Award for Outstanding Service awarded posthumously by the Ontario Association of Social Workers (OASW) to Professor Marion Bogo
May 13, 2022 – The Canadian Association of Social Workers (CASW) is pleased to announce that the 2022 Glenn Drover Award for Outstanding Service has been awarded posthumously to Professor Marion Bogo.
Presented every two years to a social worker who is a member of a CASW Partner Organization, the award honours outstanding social work practice at the local, provincial, national, or international level. It includes direct services, service on behalf of the profession, advocacy, social policy development, education, and research. Nominations are received, and the award is conferred by, a committee of CASW’s Board of Directors.
“Professor Bogo was a visionary leader with an unwavering commitment to strengthening social work education and practice,” said CASW President, Joan Davis-Whelan. “In the history of Canadian social work education, no other scholar has had such noteworthy and far-reaching influence – Professor Bogo’s work has transformed social work education both in Canada and across the globe.”
After graduating from McGill University in 1965, Professor Marion Bogo began her career as a social worker in mental health and family services. By 1979, she was a full-time faculty member in the University of Toronto’s social work programme, where she discovered what was to be her life’s passion when she began research to improve social work education in addition to her teaching duties. This passion was to be her life’s work: her research on simulation-based education and standardized assessments of competence now informs MSW curricula not only in schools across Canada, but throughout the world. Her work can be found published in 125 journal articles and book chapters and seven books.
During her long and impactful career, Professor Bogo received many awards and recognitions. To highlight only a few, in 2013, she was awarded the Significant Lifetime Achievement in Social Work Education Award from the Council on Social Work Education; in 2018 Memorial University granted her a Doctorate of Laws (honoris causa); and in 2014 she was appointed as an Officer of the Order of Canada for her achievements in the field of social work as both a teacher and a scholar – and for advancing the field in Canada and abroad.
“Professor Bogo’s impact on social work education and practice at home, and abroad, cannot be overstated, “said Davis-Whelan. “This award will only serve to further solidify her legacy as a veritable giant in our field. We are honoured to present award this prestigious honour to Dr. Bogo and thank our partners at the Ontario Association of Social Workers for this nomination.”
The national award was presented posthumously during the Ontario Association of Social Workers' (OASW) Annual General Meeting on May 13, 2022.
