In this paper, CASW calls on the federal government to protect self-determination while addressing the structural inequities and barriers to care that shape experiences of suffering in the context of Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD).
CASW recommends that the federal government, working with provincial and territorial governments and health and social-service systems:
- Clarify the purpose of practice interventions, such as assessment, relevant to each track
- Resource practice supports
- Ensure timely and accessible means to relieve suffering
- Implement a basic income
- Standardize national data across both tracks
- Create a privacy-protective public data repository
- Establish national oversight and independent audits
