Ottawa, ON – January 2, 2026 – After Budget 2025 appeared not to deliver on the promise to include social workers in Canada Student Loan Forgiveness, the Canadian Association of Social Workers (CASW) expressed its deep disappointment.
Today, CASW retracts its disappointment and, with great joy, extends its heartfelt gratitude and appreciation to the Government of Canada for announcing that, as of December 31, 2025, social workers are eligible for Canada Student Loan Forgiveness.
“It’s uplifting for social workers to be recognized alongside other professions that provide vital health and support services to rural and remote communities,” states Barbara Whitenect, CASW President.
