Professional Self-Care: An Ethical Imperative
Mar 2, 2023 4:00 am EST
Description

The CASW Code of Ethics (2005) says, “Ethical behaviour comes from a social worker’s individual commitment to engage in ethical practice. Both the spirit and the letter of this Code of Ethics will guide social workers as they act in good faith and with a genuine desire to make sound judgements.”

Workplace stress can challenge Social Workers’ mental health and therefore affect their ability to maintain a meaningful and effective professional practice.

This webinar uses the principles of a Cognitive Behavior Therapy to provide Social Workers with a framework to examine their own professional practice, to be able to identify their unique needs to enhance or improve professional effectiveness and then to formulate an action plan to address those needs to maintain a lasting and meaningful professional practice for years to come.

The Black Experience (Black Excellence, Black Resistance, Black Dignity and Black Futures) Keynote
Feb 21, 2023 5:00 am EST
Description

Limited time event - unfortunately the on-demand session is no longer available for viewing.

Note this webinar takes place at 9am – 10:30am CST (10:00am-11:30am EST).

Selam will take us along a poetic and truthful journey of what the archetypes of the Black experience look and feel like here in so-called Canada and globally. She will uncover the ways in which Black resistance is deeply connected to dignity and collective liberation.

Black folks are not a monolith, yet we share a collective experience called Pan-Africanism. A Black identity that is deeply political, spiritual, cultural, unique and rooted in not just survival but beauty, strength and Indigenous wisdom.

“The very serious function of racism is distraction. It keeps you from doing your work. It keeps you explaining, over and over again, your reason for being.” —Toni Morrison

When we know who we are, we can envision where we want to be. Black women entrepreneurs are the fastest-growing group for a reason. Selam will help us explore and imagine what is possible for the future of Black communities, how Black people can rise up to reclaim our rightful place and how accomplices can work in solidarity for equity and liberation.

Join us for an experience of radical awakening, relearning and celebration in this 90-minute virtual session.

Making Cent$ of Money: Budgeting 101
Jan 31, 2023 6:00 am EST
Description

Budgeting has gotten a bad reputation as something that is restrictive, boring and doesn’t work.  A budget is simply a plan for your money based on your priorities and goals.  Let’s reframe how we think about spending plans and learn how they can help your clients manage their household finances.

Have you ever wondered why some people are so good with their money and others aren’t?  Likely someone taught them how to manage their money so they can create the life they want. Most of us weren’t born knowing how to intuitively manage our money, our parents likely didn’t discuss money let alone teach us, and it wasn’t part of the curriculum when we were in school, so we learn by the school of hard knocks.

However, here’s the good news – creating a spending plan is skill set that anyone can learn and a process you can support your clients with!  The better news is that we have broken down budgeting into seven easy steps.  In the Making Cent$ of Money: Budgeting 101 workshop, you will learn how to empower your clients to:

·         Set SMART financial goals

·         Understand the components of a spending plan

·         Track expenses and identify areas of change

·         Plan and pay for irregular expenses

·         Create and manage savings for goals like emergency savings and fun things

·         Create a paycheque plan

Clinical Supervision in Private Practice
Jan 26, 2023 8:00 am EST
Description

Social workers in private practice experience unique challenges and rewards. Practicing often in isolation, private practitioners need to take exceptional considerations to ensure they are being accountable to the Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice.

We will explore Value 6 –where Social Workers have a responsibility to maintain professional proficiency, to continually strive to increase their professional knowledge and skills, and to apply new knowledge in practice commensurate with their level of professional education, skill and competency, seeking consultation and supervision as appropriate. What could that look like in private practice where there is no governing employer? What is a minimal competency and how do we increase our proficiency in this ever-changing society? How could you network and support your practice to ensure clients are receiving the highest quality of service? And why is this so important? What are some of the pitfalls and common complaints?

Awareness of the many requirements of private practice will assist social workers to establish supervision as part of their practice.

The Right to Die: Supporting clients through Medical Assistance in Dying
Jan 24, 2023 8:00 am EST
Description

As of 2016 Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) became legal in Manitoba, since this time the number of patient requests for MAiD as an end-of-life option continues to increase. Presentation attendees will be educated on the MAiD process, ethical considerations, as well as how a medically assisted death can affect the individual, their identified support system and the patient’s health care team.

Workshop Participants will learn:

  • MAiD process and eligibility requirements
  • Social work role on the interdisciplinary MAiD team
  • MAiD and MCSW standards of practice, code of ethics considerations
  • Conscience-based objection and the responsibility of healthcare providers
  • The effects of Bill C7 change and upcoming legislation change
  • Grief after MAiD

Description

Given the current political shift towards the decriminalization of drugs, it is especially important for practitioners to understand the implications of this in their work and in the lives of those they support.

While decrim is most certainly a positive step, the violence and stigma towards those who use substances is far from over.  Wendy and Leita will facilitate an interactive conversation to explore the history of the war on drugs and those most impacted, what decrim really means and what comes next.
