Janice Christianson-Wood obtained her BSW in 1990 and MSW in 1995 from the University of Manitoba and has been steadfast in her commitment to the profession ever since.
As a practitioner, Jan worked in child welfare starting in front line child protection in 1990, moving to a research project at the University of Manitoba and returning to practice at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in 1995. After a brief period at the Office of the Children’s Advocate, Jan held several positions at the General CFS Authority. Although she “officially retired” in 2017, Jan has continued to serve, strengthening the profession through her work at provincial, national and international levels.
Social work is not just what Jan does, it is who she is as a person. Her heart and soul are devoted to the profession. Her dedication to furthering Social Work service delivery and knowledge is apparent in Manitoba and beyond our borders. Her advanced knowledge and continuous learning is evident in her social justice advocacy through the many Board of Director/Committee positions she has held, including MIRSW, MCSW, CASW and the International Federation of Social Workers.
In her retirement Jan remains active as a member of the Wildwood Community Board of Directors, a member of the MCSW Inquiry Committee and her international work with the Commonwealth Organization for Social Workers (COSW). Jan can be found on any given day, fostering her 48-year passion for poodles by channelling all of her pup love into the lives of her standard poodle Bo and rescue toy poodle Pepper.
