Background
In 2022, CASW and the Association of Black Social Workers (Nova Scotia) completed a joint Reparations for Social Workers of African Descent study with recommendations. The National Africentric Social Work Circle Student Leadership Scholarship supports the fulfillment of a recommendation that CASW, in conjunction with its provincial associations, should offer two scholarships to social work students of African, Caribbean, and Black descent.
Since 2022, several provincial Black social work associations and networks have been established and have coordinated into the National Africentric Social Work Circle (NASWC). The NASWC developed the criteria for the National Africentric Social Work Circle Student Leadership Scholarship.
CASW and NASWC will coordinate on the selection of two annual $1000 scholarships to be presented each year in February during Black History Month.
Criteria
- Nominee must be attending or enrolled in an accredited School of Social Work program in Canada, completing a Bachelor or Master of Social Work
- Nominee must have demonstrated advocacy efforts such as student activism, community organizing, and informal mentorship that has contributed to improved outcomes for African, Caribbean, and Black populations in Canada.
To promote accessibility and inclusion, students will be able to submit their scholarship applications in various formats, allowing for diverse modes of expression and engagement.
Applications must be received by CASW on or before January 1st to be considered for that year.
Application submissions will also be accepted by email to casw@casw-acts.ca.
Submissions for the 2027 scholarship must be received on or before January 1st, 2027.
